2008 CTBUH 8TH WORLD CONGRESS - March 3-5, 2008
With less than a week to go, the final arrangements for the congress could hardly be more positive, with recent keynote confirmations from their excellencies Hussain Nasser Lootah of the Dubai Municipality and Mohamed Ali Alabbar, Chairman of Emaar. We now have over 750 delegates registered and expect final attendance to go well over 800. Currently there are 42 countries represented. Several companies have registered significant delegations, including AECOM (27 delegates), Arup (22), Atkins (21), Davis Langdon (14) and Turner (13). It is not too late to register (though all social-networking events are now sold out): www.ctbuh2008.org. See you in Dubai!
INTERNATIONAL TALL BUILDING NEWS
Full Moon Rising, Azerbaijan
Hotel Full Moon is essentially a disc with rounded edges and a hole in one of the top corners that appears radically different to the view depending on the angle it is seen from. The frontage thanks to the bulging centre makes it appear more like a glass death star whilst the side profile is more than a little gherkinesque.......link
A new angle on Seattle's skyline
The developer who saved the historic First United Methodist Church sanctuary last year has unveiled plans for an asymmetrical skyscraper next door that could be a striking addition to the downtown Seattle skyline. At 660 feet, Daniels Development Co.'s Fifth and Columbia Tower would be the city's fifth-tallest building, and the tallest constructed since 1990.........link
Making Over Mumbai
The state government of Maharashtra, of which Mumbai (formerly Bombay) is the capital, wants to raze dozens of slums like Dharavi for redevelopment and new infrastructure as part of its multibillion-dollar plan to turn the city into a world-class financial center by 2015......link
Lucien Lagrange Design Chicago Condo Towers
Lucien Lagrange Architects has designed a couple of slick new condo towers to stand in Chicago. Standing at 137 metres and 115 metres respectively, the two residential towers called X/O Condominiums have rather nice kinks in the middle making them look like they are boogying down on the dance floor.....link
Robert AM Stern unveils Manhattan skyscraper
The project, commissioned by New York property mogul Larry Silverstein, harks back to the Neo-Gothic style of the 1920s and 1930s with its use of limestone and cast-stone materials. The scheme will house a 175-room Four Seasons hotel over 22 floors. The rest of the building will be residential space. .....link
