San Francisco's Transit Center Officially Receives Final Approval
San Francisco's Planning Commission gave its final approval to plans to build the 1,070-foot (326-meter) tall Transbay Tower. The 61-story tower, part of a 145-acre Transit Center District with commercial high-rises, residential towers, hotels and retail space, is set to become San Francisco's tallest building.
Kingdom Tower Signs Foundation Deal
Although there is still no official word on when construction will start on Kingdom Tower, there are signs of progress. Saudi BAUER Foundation Contractors Ltd. announced it signed a deal for the enabling works for Kingdom, the one-kilometer-tall tower planned for Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
Frankfurt Skyscraper Tops out as Construction Costs Soar
The European Central Bank has reported that its new Frankfurt headquarters, Skytower, is costing 41 percent more to build than expected, Bloomberg reports. The company blames the increase on higher prices for construction materials and "a number of unforeseen challenges."
Arabtec Wins Gazprom Contract
Arabtec has received a AED453 million (US$123 million) contract to build Europe's future tallest tower, the 463-meter (1,520-foot) Lakhta Center on the outskirts of Moscow. The long-delayed Gazprom project found new life when it was relocated to a more acceptable site after initial UNESCO opposition.
Infinity Tower Sao Paolo Reaches Completion
New York-based Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) recently completed the 28-story Infinity Tower in the financial district of São Paulo, Brazil. The 118-meter (387-foot) tall tower is reminiscent of a schooner under full sail, according to the project description.
Toronto's Tall Building Boom Continues with 'L' Tower Topping out
Studio Daniel Libeskind hosted a ceremony in Toronto to celebrate the topping out of the 58-story L Tower, the latest addition to Toronto's tall building boom. Toronto is home to more than 80 percent of Canada's tall building construction, according to the latest CTBUH data.
