World’s 100th Topped-Out Supertall: Nanchang Twin Towers
The Jiangxi Nanchang Greenland Central Plaza is the 100th supertall (300 meters or higher) building to be topped out or completed around the world. The 303-meter Jiangxi project is now the tallest building complex in Nanchang, and there are now 80 completed supertalls worldwide.
SOM Wins Contest for Swedish Skyscraper
The London office of SOM has beaten four other finalists, including Zaha Hadid and Ian Simpson, in the contest to design one of the tallest buildings in Scandinavia, a 230-meter mixed-use tower in Gothenburg. More than 50 global firms entered the contest for the waterfront project.
Megatall Pair Envisioned for Wuhan
Renderings have been unveiled of the twin 1,000-meter Phoenix Towers in Wuhan, China, which if completed would be the world’s tallest pair of skyscrapers. The towers are outfitted with wind turbines, solar panels, thermal chimneys and rainwater harvesting systems.
Frankfurt Tower Will Be Solar Aktivhaus
The Kaminiarz, a remarkable apartment tower at the Skyline Plaza complex in Frankfurt, will produce not only the tallest residential building in Germany, exceeding a planned Frank Gehry project by about 10 meters, but will also be an Aktivhaus (“Active House”) project, embodying strict sustainability principles.
Mori Sees Tokyo’s Toranoman Hills as Tip of Pre-Olympian Iceberg
Mori Building Co., one of Japan’s largest developers, on the verge of opening the 256-meter Toranoman Hills tower, plans more projects in central Tokyo worth an estimated 1 trillion yen (US$9.7 billion). Mori plans to develop about 10 projects over the next decade in the area, said Mori’s president and CEO.
Cape Town Gets First New High-Rise in 21 Years
The completion of Portside, a 32-floor office tower, marks the first high-rise to hit the Cape Town skyline in 21 years, and could prompt the building of more iconic, high-rise developments other South African inner cities. The 142-meter tower is now Cape Town's tallest.
