Architect Selected to Design the World’s Tallest Office Tower in Dubai
Tall building specialists Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture (AS+GG) have been chosen by the master developer of Dubai’s Jumeirah Lakes Towers (JLT) district to design the Burj 2020 tower, which is set to be the world’s tallest office tower. AS+GG has also designed Saudi Arabia’s Kingdom Tower - the one-kilometer-high tower to be completed in 2019.
Passive House Tower Breaks Ground on Roosevelt Island in New York
Construction began in June on an apartment tower on Roosevelt Island that will be the tallest passive-house high-rise in the world when it is completed in 2017, according to the Passive House Institute in Germany. The tower will rise 270 feet (82 meters), and house about 530 graduate students, faculty, and staff on a new 12-acre (5-hectare) campus for Cornell Tech.
High-Rise Investors Overwhelm the Small, Crowded Alleyways in Hanoi
High-rise buildings and apartments are beginning to crowd small alleyways and residential areas in Hanoi, and as a result, investors are putting immense pressures on already weak infrastructure systems, Builders target alleyways for new developments because they are conveniently located, and tend to have an established neighborhood of shops, restaurants, and schools.
New Development to Breathe New Life into Gold Coast’s Chinatown
The Gold Coast borough of Southport is set for a major expansion as a developer prepares to build an Asia-influenced supertall that would dwarf Surfers Paradise’s Q1. The development will include two towers, with the largest expected to top 88 stories, while its smaller counterpart is expected to be around 38 levels.
Johannesburg’s Ponte Tower Becomes Symbol of Urban Revitalization
Once a Jacuzzi-filled playground for the segregated white elite in the apartheid era, then falling into chaos in the 1990s, Ponte Tower is now undergoing a renaissance as an icon of Johannesburg’s urban revitalization. The tower’s aura is far from glitzy but its strict office manager is optimistic. She states, “Our goal is to get it back to where it was.”
Three Office Towers Planned for Rome’s Tor di Valle District
Designs have been revealed for three office towers for the city center of Rome, forming a new urban district adjacent to the A.S. Roma stadium. Arranged in a triangular formation upon a 3,000-square-meter public piazza, the trio of towers – which vary in height up to 220 meters – work in conversation with one another, as if cut from a single stone block.
