Glasgow’s Red Road Flats Are Set for Demolition
After becoming a byword for the failure of high-rise housing due to a range of social and structural problems, the Red Road Flats will finally come down. Two of the original eight blocks were razed in controlled explosions in 2012 and 2013. The six remaining structures will be brought down concurrently later this year, following a controversial proposal to demolish them on live television.
Damper at TAIPEI 101 Records Biggest Movement Ever
TAIPEI 101's mass damper moved by a full meter from its center position during Typhoon Soudelor on August 8, setting a new record for the internal mechanisms of the building. The building utilizes a tuned mass damper, an enormous weighted sphere suspended between the 87th and 92nd floors that sits on hydraulic cylinders and counteracts the building's movement.
Bahrain’s $650 Million Villamar Project to Restart
The developer of the long-delayed Villamar project – launched in 2007 close to the Bahrain Financial Harbour complex – said that work is restarting after the restructuring of the project’s finances. More than 50 percent of these apartments have already been sold, but once complete, the remaining funds from the development will be used to fit-out the interiors of the rest of the project.
New Renderings of The One in Toronto Revealed
The One, which will be Canada's tallest building upon completion, has undergone a number of design changes. Recent renderings reveal changes to the building's exterior façade. The updated design points to a more sensitive treatment of the public realm and a more engaged relationship with the street, with the addition of benches and trees to animate the sidewalk.
Construction Begins on Vietnam’s Tallest Tower in Ho Chi Minh City
British architect Atkins has started work on the 460-meter Vincom Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City, set to become the tallest building in Vietnam upon completion. The 81-story skyscraper will surpass the Landmark 72 in Hanoi. The tower’s design will to include a hotel, serviced apartments, and retail space. Together with the landscaping the development is 241,000 square meters.
Smoke-Ring-Blowing Chimney Proposed for Copenhagen Power Plant
Bjarke Ingels has launched a public crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to raise funds for a 124-meter power plant chimney that will blow smoke rings to symbolize CO2 consumption. The power plant will convert waste to energy. The smokestack will use an elastic mechanism to release steam rings that measure 25 meters in diameter and three meters in height.
