The Shard's Inaugural Ceremonies
London officially welcomed Renzo Piano's Shard to its skyline with a laser light show and royalty-studded ceremony. The ceremony was hosted by Prince Andrew and Sheikh Hamad Bin Jassem Bin Jabor Al Thani, Prime Minister of Foreign Affairs of Qatar, which backed the development.
Macedonia Launches Tower Project
Macedonian leaders and Turkish developers officially launched Macedonia's largest and tallest residential construction project. The EUR300 million (USD365 million), four-tower complex is located in the country's capital city of Skopje.
Manchester May Get New Tower
London-based Chelmer Developments has submitted a planning application to build a 410-foot (125-meter) tower on River Street in Manchester. The tower was designed by Ian Simpson architects which also designed Beetham Tower, currently the tallest building in the city.
Sydney Group Approves "Super Slim" Skyscraper
A city planning group in Sydney has approved a Kannfinch-designed mixed-use development, 115 Bathurst Street, for a site in Sydney's CBD. The development includes a "super-slim," 240-meter (787-foot) tower which would be the third tallest building in the city.
Seville Keeps UNESCO Status Despite Skyscraper Concerns
UNESCO decided not to place Seville's old town on the "danger list," despite concerns about the impact of a 178-meter (584-foot) tower designed by Cesar Pelli. UNESCO had objected to the construction of the EUR300 million (US$368.5 million) project, which will house the headquarters of Cajasol Bank.
Judge OKs Demolition of Harmon Hotel
A Nevada state judge granted MGM Resorts International permission to implode the flawed hotel tower that was partially built but never opened. Clark County District Court Judge Elizabeth Gonzalez's pretrial ruling is a prelude to the trial next year in a massive construction defect case.

The CTBUH Young Professionals Committee organized a tour of Coast at Lakeshore East, a 49-story high-rise under construction in the Windy City.
Venice Workshop Draws International Students
More than 50 students from eight countries participated in a tall building workshop staged by IUAV University of Venice, in conjunction with the CTBUH.
Executive Director Speaks at Museum Exhibition
Executive Director Antony Wood discussed the latest tall buildings trends at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago, as part of Skyscraper: Art and Architecture Against Gravity.
