The Shard Celebrates Foggy Opening Day
London's Shard officially acquired the title of Europe's tallest skyscraper with the opening of the viewing platform on February 1. Designed by Italian Pritzker Prize-winner Renzo Piano, the building will serve as an icon for the city of London, although it has attracted both opposition and admiration.
BIG's W57 Tower Approved
The New York City Council has granted final approval to the Bjarke Ingels Group-designed West 57th Tower in Manhattan. After disputing the affordable housing options in the tower, the parties reached a compromise to include 173 affordable housing units in the 32-story tetrahedral-shaped W57 building.
OMA Wins Shenzhen Tower Competition
Rem Koolhaas's Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) has won the design competition for the Essence Financial Building in Shenzhen, China. The design was chosen from the shortlist of four other entries by international and Chinese practices.
Kenya Launches "Popup City"
In January, Kenya launched its Konza Technology City, a US$14.4 billion "popup city" located 40 miles from Nairobi. Nicknamed the "African Silicon Savannah," Konza was master planned by SHoP Architects and is part of Kenya's Vision 2030 plan.
Plans Moving Forward to Build Tallest Tower in Los Angeles
After years of delays and changes, Korean Airlines has unveiled its AC Martin-designed plans for the 73-story Wilshire Grand tower in LA's financial district. The US$1 billion mixed-use tower will reach 335 meters and claim the title of the tallest building west of Chicago upon completion.
Partnership Plans Pair of Bonifacio Towers
Century Properties Group has partnered with Asian Carmakers Corp. (ACC) to build a PHP1 billion (US$24 million) two-tower development in Bonifacio Global City in the Philippines. The project is part of Century Properties' plan to expand its portfolio to include commercial and tourism developments.

We are looking for contributors to the Façade Access Working Group's upcoming technical guide. Designers, developers, consultants and suppliers are encouraged to participate.
YPC Hosts Student Workshop at IIT
The Council's fast-growing Young Professionals Committee hosted a workshop at the Illinois Institute of Technology campus focusing on the development of the Roosevelt University Tower in Chicago.
Council Launches YouTube Channel
The Council's library of interviews and presentations from recent events is now easily accessible. The CTBUH has also launched a monthly video series spotlighting recent interviews.
IIT Dean Wiel Arets to Celebrate Investiture
The IIT College of Architecture Dean, Wiel Arets, will present his direction for the College at the Mies Birthday Party, March 13. CTBUH members are welcome to attend.
