China Broad Breaks Ground on Sky City – Or Does It?
The company hoping to build the world's tallest skyscraper in record time held a groundbreaking ceremony on Saturday, July 20, in Changsha, China. But since then, media reports have circulated claiming that Broad Sustainable Building has failed to obtain government approval for the project.
TELUS Launches Sky Tower by BIG
TELUS, one of Canada's largest telecommunications companies, is set to begin construction on a 58-story tower in Calgary's downtown core. The TELUS Sky tower, designed by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), will incorporate office space, retail stores and 341 residential rental suites.
50 United Nations Tops Out
Manhattan's Foster + Partners-designed tower at 50 United Nations Plaza has topped out, reaching its full 44-story height in less than eight months. The building will feature 88 residences ranging from one-bedrooms to a duplex penthouse measuring nearly 10,000 square feet (929 square meters).
Dubai Creek Harbor Is Happening
Emaar Properties and Dubai Holdings have begun construction of their new central business district project, the Dubai Creek Harbor. The companies created the venture to develop the project in early July, and have since engaged in serious construction efforts on the site of the recession-halted Dubai Lagoons, Gulf News reports.
Struggling City Pride Proposal Clears Major Hurdle
The 239-meter (784-foot) tower in London's Docklands has been approved after a planning decision was unexpectedly deferred. The City Pride Tower on Westferry Road, planned by Chalegrove Properties, is expected to be the tallest residential building in the UK, and the nation's second tallest overall.
Two Supertalls Squashed in Melbourne
Plans to build what may have been the southern hemisphere's tallest skyscraper in Melbourne have been abandoned. Fender Katsalidis Architects has confirmed it is redesigning plans for Australia 108 after a series of code requirements rendered the proposal "impossible."
